linchpinWe love Seth Godin at JVM, as he is a brilliant author, blogger and marketer. One of our favorite Godin books is called Linchpin, another short and fun read we recommend for everyone.

Godin’s primary point is this: Team members can no longer just carefully follow instructions at their job to get ahead; nowadays they must make themselves literally indispensable.

They do this by pouring their heart, soul, and energy into their work; by always going the extra mile even when nobody is noticing; and by giving without expecting anything in return.

The book is a great motivator for everyone – managers and team members alike, and it is especially valuable for young people starting out in the workforce. Many young people get discouraged at their new jobs b/c they think their work is fruitless or unnoticed, but Linchpin reminds them to go the extra mile no matter what (and then they will get noticed).

JVM has an entire office of Linchpins in the extreme. It is very fun to be around, and it also spoils us.

Heejin sometimes consults for other companies that are staffed by a lot of very competent rule followers. B/c Heejin is so spoiled by JVM’s Linchpins, she will often suggest replacing the competent rule followers. This often shocks the managers who hire Heejin, but Heejin knows how much of a difference Linchpins can make over rule followers; she has seen the results firsthand for years.

In conclusion – read Linchpin, give away Linchpin to team and family members, hire Linchpins, create Linchpins, and be a Linchpin.

Tomorrow – I will share an example of one the most amazing Linchpin transformations I have ever seen.
