Proven and Long-Lasting Positive Effects
BBBS helps improve kids’ self-esteem, academic achievement, and relationships with family and peers.
Longevity
Each mentor relationship is unique and different and takes time to develop. They require matches to meet up to 2-4 hours per visit, 2-4 times per month for a minimum of one year.
Developmental Relationships
BBBS supports friendships between adults and kids that develop over time. This proves to be highly valuable when the adult includes a kid in age-appropriate day-to-day activities.
Our very own East Bay Business Development Officer Aaron Moore has been a Big Brother in Oakland since 2014 – when his Little was only 7 years old!
Many of BBBS’ kids are from single-parent homes or live with a non-parent caregiver. Many live below the poverty level, with caregivers struggling to be an active presence while providing financial necessities for their family. Exposed to greater adversity such as elements of gang activity, substance abuse, and crime, they have the potential for greatness but need a special role model and friend they can trust. BBBS provides a lifeline for these kids, by providing a special match to help them realize their potential.
