Dan Sullivan is one of the country’s foremost business coaches, and Heejin and I love his podcast “10x Talk.” http://10xtalk.com/ He focuses on healthy thinking, relationships, environments, culture, habits, etc.

He makes it clear that you need to change yourself first, and then your business will follow suit. His advice is short, concise, concrete and extremely helpful. Every self-employed person will benefit greatly from it.

In sharp contrast is some of the business coaching and advice Heejin and I have received over the last five years from all kinds of “experts” in the mortgage arena. The experts insisted that we hire loan officers, focus more on “sales” and less on training and culture, set up call centers, open up branches, pursue mass co-marketing, and create systems and rules that do not work for JVM.

We wasted a hundred thousand dollars paying for this advice, and we lost millions in revenues trying to implement it.

We finally learned to ignore the experts and now focus on two things: (1) Hiring Amazing People; and (2) Providing Extraordinary Service. The two go hand-in-hand.

Healthy business coaching is good, but ignore “expert advice” if you have something that works.

Experts are wrong all too often.
