hire skill over experience like clemson and silicon valley

I don’t watch college football, but I do read the headlines and follow the drama b/c the stakes are so high for the coaches, schools and players (who hope to go to the NFL).

That is why this recent headline in the WSJ caught my eye: How Clemson Emulated Silicon Valley To Win a National Title.

Long story short – Clemson started a true freshman at quarterback, a position that most coaches used to think required years of experience.

Silicon Valley of course is also famous for prizing raw talent over experience, particularly in the CEO ranks.

I loved this message b/c this is a philosophy we have been following for years at JVM.

We think most employers, in the mortgage industry in particular, focus far too much on experience at the expense of raw talent.

They do this b/c they do not want to take the time to train and ramp up young talent, no matter how promising someone might be.

We have discovered, however, that focusing exclusively on talent and training fosters far more productive and skilled teams.

The time and expense required to hire and train exceptionally talented people is more than justified by their extra output and work quality.

The key is learning how to train and ramp up new team members very quickly.

And, employers also need to maintain a great culture with great incentives, or they risk losing their talent to other teams (or the pro’s, which will be Clemson’s problem).
