The JVM Lending Daily Comments: Navy Seal On Leadership: Not Toughness/Assertiveness, But OPEN MINDED
A famous Navy Seal, Jocko Willink, was on Tim Ferriss’ podcast recently. http://fourhourworkweek.com/2015/09/25/jocko-willink/
The podcast was especially interesting b/c Heejin is personally acquainted with Jocko, as she used to work with him.
An interesting fact about Jocko is that in a work setting he never, ever played the “tough guy” card. He was a pure professional at all times. This is in sharp contrast to most guys with Jocko’s physical stature.
The best part about the podcast was his discussion on leadership. The most important criteria the Seals focused on was open-mindedness or ability to take in feedback and listen to others.
Per Jocko, great leaders always know there is ten times more to know, no matter how smart they think they are. They also never point fingers and always accept responsibility.
Jocko pointed out that the Seals frequently demote or fire enormously talented people with extraordinary physical and mental gifts simply b/c they cannot take feedback.
We love this lesson b/c JVM did not take off until we started to listen to and implement the feedback from our employees. Prior to 2014, we were entirely “top-down” b/c Heejin and I thought our exceptional experience made us so much more qualified than our neophyte employees; it didn’t. We learned, and business exploded.
