College Is Hardly Necessary For Success; Calling Listing Agents After sending out Monday’s Comments discussing how we use college as a screening tool at JVM, I received the following comical email:

“None of these dudes qualify to work at JVM??”

Micky Arison – CEO of Carnival…

Mark Zuckerberg – CEO of Facebook…

Barry Diller – CEO of IAC…

Robert Pittman – CEO of iHeartMedia…

Anyway – his list went on and on and also included Abraham Lincoln, Ansel Adams, Andrew Carnegie, Andrew Jackson and a multitude of other CEOs.

College as a Screening Tool, Not a Requirement

In light of this, we’d like to clarify. We use college as a screening tool only b/c we need some way to narrow our huge applicant pool, and b/c academic skills translate well to JVM skills. We do not think, however, that college is necessary for success, as indicated by the above list.

The Power of Calling Listing Agents

Calling Listing Agents: I have a friend who owns a large mortgage company in Houston (a market almost as hot as the Bay Area’s). Recently, his firm had pre-approved buyers who were bidding on 21 different properties with multiple offers, and his buyers won 18 of those bids. When I asked why his clients won so many of the bids, he attributed the success to their calls made to listing agents. They call listing agents with every offer and follow a very detailed process to make sure every listing agent knows their financing is as good as cash.
