Steve Martin wrote an excellent autobiography that was highly recommended on a recent Tim Ferriss podcast. Heejin and l listened to it on a recent road trip and loved it b/c it is short (4 hours) and very interesting.

    One quote really stood out:

“I did stand-up comedy for 18 years. Ten of those years were spent learning, four years were spent refining, and four years were spent in wild success.”

This quote is invaluable for young people, especially young men, b/c so many do not understand how necessary experience is. This is especially the case now days as young success stories in Silicon Valley are made famous in the press. Few people realize, however, that almost all success comes after years and years of trial and error. Martin himself was virtually broke for 14 years.

The above quote is invaluable for older professionals too b/c so many get stuck in the same routines and patterns. Martin, however, was in the learning and refining mode for a full 14 years, completely overhauling his act over and over even though it was extremely risky and labor-intensive.
