Thinking Like an Owner; JVM's Book Club Again We wanted to provide a brief edit to last Friday’s Blog about JVM’s Book and Podcast Club, as it looked like there were only 10 books on the list. There are actually 36 books and 3 podcast series – listed entirely here. And again – we’d love feedback.

I went to a coffee shop a while back about ten minutes before closing time to order a decaf americano. The employees at the shop refused to serve me b/c they were closing down. I haven’t been back since. I am probably not alone. And those employees clearly did not think like an owner.

In contrast, Heidi from our office often meets with agents outside of our office even though she does not get paid for doing so and she often ends up working late b/c of it (I should add that she enjoys the task though).

Meg and Nicholas, before we launched our book club, would read books all the time and do detailed analyses to let us know how to apply what they learned.

Tiffany often sends me stats and info on weekends when I know she is not getting paid for her time. I have seen many team members sending emails long after the required hours when they are “on call” for weekend leads.

Madeline goes out of her way time and again (even writing emails for our attorney) to ensure JVM is 100% compliant. And – Darcy, at our Front Desk, treats every visitor and caller like an extremely valued guest.

I could go on and on, but these are all example of team members “thinking like an owner.”

I am not trying to say “JVM is great!” again (for which I get made fun of often). BUT – I am saying our team members are great :). And it is largely b/c they all think like owners.

Every major management book insists that you only hire team members with that mind set. We do by hiring people with extreme integrity and accountability standards.
