I bought my daughter a VW Golf for Christmas and she promptly crashed it into a wall. I would make a sexist joke about “women drivers” here, but my son did the same thing with the Golf I bought him – only he did it twice (the 2nd time he totaled it).

In any case, I needed a mobile dent remover to fix my daughter’s car so I went to Yelp. Naturally, I called the guy with the most five star reviews. He showed up right on time, and he did excellent work.

But what struck me the most was how exceptionally nice, congenial and engaging he was. I enjoyed him so much that I am hoping my daughter crashes her car again soon so I can have him back :).

My new Dent Man illuminated three basic business lessons: (1) show up on time; (2) do great work; and (3) be bend over backwards nice and engaging.

I know there are many dent removers who are much cheaper than my dent man, but I will only call my guy from now on b/c he is so nice, and good at his job.

Many people forget how important the “need for nice” is at every level of a business, and not just with customer interaction. Teams cannot function within a business unless everyone is congenial.

At JVM, one of our three pillars of hiring is simply “congeniality” (the other two are academic skill and DISC tests). No matter how talented somebody is, we don’t hire them unless they are exceptionally congenial.

I wish we’d hired our Dent Man as a business coach instead of some of the coaches we did hire. We’d have learned more, and saved a ton of money.

Show up on time. Do Great Work. Be Nice.
