There are a lot of budding basketball stars who practice incessantly at a park I walk or ride through several times per week near our home. What is interesting is how their style of practice has changed in recent years.

They were all wannabe LeBron Jameses and Kobe Bryants for years and years, practicing their pump fakes, jumpers and lane-driving. But nowadays, they all seem to emulate Steph Curry, practicing lateral dribbling and outside shots.

Given that most of the kids do not come close to matching the athleticism of LeBron and Kobe, Steph’s style of play is much better suited for them.

This is a great business metaphor b/c so many of us cling to a style of play that is clearly not best suited for us.

I clung viciously to an outdated CRM program (ACT) until Heejin made the company update to the 21st century, and it improved our productivity 5 fold. (I still complain to Heejin nonetheless :)

Similarly, we clung to outdated LOS software that would have caused serious issues for us after TRID came about, but our mortgage banking partners pushed us to switch just in time.

We also refused to go fully paperless for far too long, and we clung to an outdated “loan officer model” that nearly killed us back in the day.

The key is to always embrace change even if it requires a huge amount of work in the short run. All of our changes were very painful at first, but they have made us a much stronger company.
