My excellent stepdaughter set up a charity golf tournament and used JVM’s staff to help with the admin. She was often at the office without me and she made this observation entirely on her own: “All of your employees are best friends; they obviously really like each other…”
This is of course by design. We use a series of interview questions to ensure all employees are sincerely nice people with no hidden agendas or emotional issues. We did not always do this, and we hired “talent” without accounting for emotion. This caused much strife in our office and hurt our business.
Simon Sinek makes the point in “Leaders Eat Last” that companies perform far better when employees all get along and feel 100% safe among one-another.
Bill Gates says that Microsoft did not take off until he learned to hire employees with both high I.Q.’s and high E.Q,’s (Emotional Quotients). This skill is essential for all organizations.
