The Extreme Need To Say “No”; “Hell No’s” vs. “Hell Yeses”

Heejin’s daughter is too charismatic and popular. I am not being facetious, as it is a real problem. Too many friends and family members want to spend time with her and she is unable to say no; she does not want to miss out, give up relationships or disappoint anyone. She often runs full speed from dawn to dusk, with no down time, and she burns out. I see my son do this as well.

Because this is such a problem for so many people, it has spawned a huge “learn to say no” fad. Learning to say “no” is one of the most important skills in life management.

Derek Sivers (of TED talk fame) talks about it often: https://sivers.org/hellyeah; And James Altucher wrote a popular book called “The Power of No.”

Many young employees don’t say “no” enough because they want to be team-players and to convey a good attitude. Many self-employed people don’t say “no” enough because they don’t want to give up any potential business or opportunities. Heejin and I were guilty of this a few years ago and we completely burned out.

Saying “no” provides absolutely necessary “down time;” it allows people to focus on things they really want to do; it allows people enough time to do necessary tasks correctly; and it allows people to truly take care of themselves and others.

Saying “no” also teaches people to delegate better, and to find many more “yeses” that they love to do.

Please practice your “no’s”. We do, and we are much better for it.
