John Wooden was one of the most successful people of all time in light of his amazing record as UCLA’s basketball coach. He won 10 NCAA championships, and had a stunning 80% win/loss record.
One of our favorite stories is how he started every season with the most fundamental of lessons: how to lace up shoes.
He was making the point that everything must be done at all levels with the utmost care, diligence and attention or problems (e.g. blisters) surface later on that can cost you the game, or even the season.
This is a great business lesson of course, and especially in the mortgage industry. A missed document, a math error, an inputting error or a myriad of other tiny issues can cause entire transactions to blow up in escrow. This is why we require extreme diligence at JVM, and why we focus so much on academic skill.
