Ten years (almost to the day) ago I walked into my gym for my morning workout and got conspicuously angry sneers from an older woman who definitely did not like me. I didn’t care in the least b/c I felt the same way about her. This happened most mornings b/c my workouts were very intense (I have since mellowed – a lot), and I didn’t like it when the woman got in my way (and I may have let her know :).

The irony of this particular morning though was the fact that the woman had called me the previous day and sobbed and sobbed over the telephone. The reason was that she had just received a large check in the mail from me right after her forklift had broken down; my check enabled her to replace her forklift and put her back in business, so she cried tears of joy.

The woman ran a wonderful charity that supplied educational materials for young women in 3rd world countries. I knew her b/c I visited the charity on one my son’s field trips. She did not know me, however, b/c I didn’t have a website with photos at that time and I never introduced myself.

In any case, even though I wasn’t fond of the woman, I loved her excellent charity and I donated money every year.

I loved to donate so much b/c it felt good and b/c it was so cheap. In California, where combined State and Federal tax rates are so high, every dollar that goes to charity results in tax savings of as much as 50 cents.

This is just my reminder to everyone that now is a great time to throw money at a worthy charity; you get to feel good and save on 2015 taxes.
