A few years ago I shared a video with our office that I thought was amusing. It was a bear and monkey racing on bicycles in a circus in China, and the bear sort of ended up turning the monkey into lunch. Apparently, what is amusing to a 50-year-old Minnesota farm boy is not the least bit amusing to most other people, and especially to JVM employees. And they let me know in no uncertain terms.
The actual point of this story though is that our staff is not the least bit afraid to criticize their boss. We strongly encourage it in fact.
I read a great blog last week about the absolute necessity of courting, accepting and learning from criticism for both personal and business growth.
I realized that this is another thing that really sets JVM apart. We constantly court criticism from every corner, and consistently make adjustments b/c of it.
We send surveys to every borrower and request frank criticism.
We also send follow up emails to every Realtor we work with and request frank feedback, and many are very forthcoming. :)
There is one huge caveat when it comes to adjusting to criticism – it needs to come primarily from insiders, customers and referral sources who understand your business. In years past, JVM was badly led astray by input from outside consultants who did not understand our business model in the least.
