When we first started to grow our business, we’d take in enormous amounts of outside business advice from every source and try to apply it to JVM. It was only after much trial and error that we figured out that “one size does not fit all.” Much business advice simply does not work for JVM.

I was reminded of this when I read this recent posting on Forbes.com about the Five Personality Traits of Apple Employees:

1. Passion and Idealism; 2. Don’t take “no” for answer; 3. Don’t accept the status quo; 4. Inherently not satisfied with things; and 5. Can’t be told things are impossible.

There are parts of Apple’s approach that we love, especially how they “hire for attitude and train for skill” but the iconoclasts they hire would completely disrupt JVM’s flow and efficiency.

B/c the mortgage industry is so much about regulations, diligence and i-dotting and t-crossing, we need much more structured people (even though we love the values Apple looks for).

At JVM, with our regulations, systems and team structure, we look for: (1) academic skill; (2) congeniality; (3) diligence; and (4) accountability, before we look for the traits Apple loves.
