Adding Eggs & Why Agents Should Let Sellers Help Sell Their Home


When General Mills introduced Betty Crocker boxed cake mixes in the 1950s, they included dried eggs.

Aspiring cooks just had to add water to the mix in order to get a perfect cake.

But, the cakes were so easy and so good that women felt guilty about deceiving people and sales lagged.

So, General Mills removed the dried eggs and required women to add eggs of their own and sales shot through the roof.

I was reminded of this story when I read this Zillow article about “Do Some of It Yourself” sellers.

Sellers not only seem to enjoy helping with many of the activities required to sell a home, but homes actually sell much faster when sellers help.

According to the article, the activities sellers can help with include completing home improvements, setting the list price, deciding when to sell the home, ordering home inspections, staging the home, promoting the home (via social media), and showing the home.

Millennials are the most likely to help, as opposed to Gen Xers and Boomers. And urban buyers are more likely to help than rural buyers.

I know having too much seller involvement is anathema to many agents, but there appears to be many benefits (according to Zillow’s survey).
