Be Like “Twinkie”; 9,000 Employees to 1,000; Efficiency

I used to love to buy my kids Deep Fried Twinkies at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, so you can imagine my sadness when they stopped making Twinkies in 2012 (b/c I could no longer poison my kids :))

I just read in Forbes, however, that Twinkies are back. And this is what is interesting: They are making the same amount of Twinkies today that they made in 2012, but they have scaled the number of employees down from 9,000 to 1,000. And the number of factories from 14 to 3.

This is an amazing lesson in finding efficiencies, and one the mortgage industry sorely needs to learn. There is more wasted labor in our industry overall than in any other, I think.

At JVM we meet every week to figure out how to carve out more and more efficiencies. Our motto is: “Be Like Twinkie!” OK, it’s not. But, we do like the Twinkie lesson.
