My Dad used to tell a story about a woman who always cut the ends off her ham before putting it in the oven. Her husband asked her why she did so, and she said it was b/c her Mom had always done so. So the husband asked his wife’s Mom why she always cut the ends of her hams, and his wife’s Mom said it was b/c her Mom did so.

So the husband asked his wife’s Grandma why she cut the ends off her hams, and her Grandma replied: “it was the only way I could get them to fit in the pan I had.”

In other words, two generations cut the ends of their hams for no reason. I love this story b/c it is so indicative of the mortgage and real estate industries. Thousands of inefficient processes are repeated over and over only b/c that is the way they have always been done.

Everyone does this, including JVM. Our CRM, Data Storage, and LOS software systems and procedures, for example, are all far too inefficient for JVM standards, and we are fixing them.

Successful organizations are able and willing to look for unnecessary ham-cutting, and to make changes.

Where are you cutting the ends of your hams?
